Every Child Matters. We want to thank those brave members of our community who shared with us the experience of their loved ones who attended a residential school at some point in the very recent past. Our learning was that this is not something that took place a long time ago, and far from here. We know that there were residential schools across the country, and that the last one closed in 1997.
Foundation Skills Assessment - We will begin assessing our Grade Four students in the next week or two, to gain a snapshot of their learning. The data from this assessment helps us determine next steps for learning, and allows the district and the province to see how children from all over BC compare. Please know that the assessment consists of reading some short passages and responding to some questions, writing a few short pieces, and answering some math questions in a booklet and online. This assessment is created by BC teachers, tested in BC classrooms, and marked by local districts. You will receive your child's booklet back with all the elements scored. The BC Ministry of Education Student Learning Assessment Order expects all students in Grade Four to write the FSA. Mr. Coats has years of experience in the design and marking of the FSA, so please reach out if you have any questions.
Literacy Tips - There is a lot of research around how children learn to read and write, and we know that oral language plays a large role. Your child listening and speaking with you can actually help them develop as readers. Please see Mrs. Krebbers website here for more ideas and tips.
Toonies for Terry - We will have our Terry Fox run on Thursday morning, and are asking students to each donate a toonie. If you have more than one you can send in, that would be even better!
When your child is sick - Please keep your child home if they are sick. The best way to keep things from spreading is to keep sick children away from healthy children. Call the office if you have any questions. Thank you!
Parent Teacher Conferences - Virtual conferences are happening next week, and you should have been sent the link to the sign-up system called Sign-Up Genius. Classes will be dismissed 2 hours early at 12:30pm on both days, Wed. the 6th and Thurs. the 7th.
Hope - The theme for this year is Hope. We will be examining ways at school to be hopeful, and look optimistically toward the future. As a staff we began with this video about what some students and teachers may be hoping for in the coming year. Here is a CBC Kids video of children discussing goals.
School Song with lyrics - Mrs. Schjodt put this video together so you can read the lyrics as well.

Springvalley Elementary School now has a Rest and Return room that focuses on providing a calming environment and activities to help students regulate their emotions rather than leaving students to their own devices. It is a space that teaches students how to identify their emotional triggers and provides tools to help them manage these big feelings. Adult assistance in problem solving prevention is provided as well. This allows students to self-refer when feeling overwhelmed for a structured 10-minute time, with supports, in our Rest and Return room. If you have any questions regarding this space and its uses please contact Ms. Everett at [email protected].
Safety Patrol
30 of our grade five students are helping children and families arrive safely to school each day. Please watch for them at the cross walk on Ziprick road, and listen for the whistle of the team leader before crossing.

PAC Update
Happy October Springvalley Elementary parents and families! Thank you for your support and patience for our September 21st PAC AGM. We unfortunately had a few technical difficulties but in the end were able to successfully elect the executive for our Parent Advisory Council (PAC). I am excited to announce that this year’s Parent Executive Council is a mix of new and old faces. Please join me in welcoming our new PAC for the 2021-22 School Year. Dorey Gardiner – President Steven Haraldson – Vice President Breanna Kelly – Treasurer Jammie Paterson – Central Okanagan Parent Advisory Council Representative Kristy Mertes – Secretary Cortney Caldwell – Member at Large Amanda Finlay – Member at Large Melanie Burch – Member at Large As your PAC we are here to represent the parents of the Springvalley Elementary School. As well as being a voice for the parents we have in years past been able to bring the Vancouver Aquarium Aqua Bus to the school, hold events like the Monster Bash Dance or Year End Carnival, help the students learn to roller blade and start planning for a new school playground. Although we are still dealing with the challenges of Covid we are slowly being able to offer the children a few more opportunities we have had in the past. We are currently looking at trying to start up hot lunches this year, but we can only achieve this with parent volunteers. If you are able to help out 1 – 2 times a month on a Friday morning between 10am and 12:30pm please email us at our PAC email address below. Lastly, I would like to invite you to our monthly PAC meetings that will be taking place at 7pm on the second Wednesday of each month. The Zoom meeting ID is 848 213 0155 with a pass code SVEPAC. It is a great opportunity to learn what your child is doing beforehand! Our next meeting will be held on October 13th at 7pm and we hope to see you there! If you would like to contact us regarding hot lunches, fundraising ideas, or parent concerns you need support for please email us at [email protected] Stay Safe and Healthy! FreshGrade Portfolios - This is our primary way of communicating your child's learning at Springvalley. Digital learning portfolios are where your child has the opportunity to share what they are learning and have CRITICALLY IMPORTANT LEARNING CONVERSATIONS with you. Please login and make a difference in the learning your child is engaging with. You may want to set one night a week where you review your child's site and talk about:
1. What they are doing well. (more than just "good job." Boost their self esteem by proving to them that they are doing well with something specific: ex. "You have lots of interesting words like 'brilliant' and 'magical' in your writing example"). 2. What they want to improve and next steps in their learning. Click here to login to your parent account or sign up for an account or download the Freshgrade parent app. Parent / Teacher conferences will be on October 6th and 7th. A sign up will be sent to you soon. |
