From the SVE Admin Team
2020 is here! A new decade has arrived and it holds so much promise. What goals do you want to set this year to help your family life improve?
One goal we invite your family to partner with us on is helping your child develop self-regulation skills. As administrators, we have the honour and privilege of helping students walk through difficult conflict situations with their peers on a regular basis. Learning to deal with conflict is one of the most important skills children (and adults) can learn.
One critical step we have learned as educators, is that trying to solve problems with children when they are upset or angry does not work. We all have a "thinking brain" and a "feeling brain". When we are upset, our thinking brain goes off line, and our feeling brain takes over. Without a thinking brain online, you CAN'T work through a conflict rationally.
Knowing this, we never try to solve a problem when a child is heightened. Only once the child calms down are they able to solve the problem using their problem solving thinking brain.
GET CALM FIRST; THEN SORT OUT THE PROBLEM.
The chart below hangs in our office. When a child is calm, they are in the GREEN zone. When they are starting to get upset, they are in the YELLOW zone. If they get into the RED zone and get angry, their thinking brain goes offline and they do things they would never do otherwise; their thinking brain is not working.
Using this language and approach at home with your child will help school and home be consistent, and provide the best chance each child will learn important calming and self-regulation skills.
Oh, and one more BIG TIP: one of the biggest gifts you can give your child to help them stay regulated is SLEEP! It helps us have the self-control we need during the day. It also helps us concentrate and learn! Remember, Kids need 10-12 hours of sleep each night!
Have a great 2020, and may you achieve all the goals you and your family set out to conquer this year!
