Welcome Back - from the SVE Admin Team…
On behalf of Springvalley Elementary School, we want to welcome you all to another great year of learning! This year we are happy to welcome 40+ new kindergarten students and 225+ students in other grades to our school. We are SO happy that you are joining us! We are certain our new families will learn quickly what a wonderfully supportive community we have here at SVE. We do have a few new staff members to introduce: welcome to Ms. Rintoul, our new Indigenous Peoples Advocate who is joining Ms. Wynne. A hearty welcome to two new CEAs this year: Ms. Rotenburger, and Ms. Hand. And finally, we are so happy to say "Welcome Back" to Ms. Fortuin who returns to us after her maternity leave. These new staff members are joining a very strong team of supportive and nurturing SVE staff members. We all look forward to working with your children this year!
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

We will do our best to have classes solidified and your child placed in their new classroom by the end of the day on September 4th. NEW STUDENTS - Please go to the gymnasium where our VP, Mr. Van Brummelen and our Music teacher, Mrs. Schjodt will take you to your new classrooms.
NOTE: The first day of school schedule is from 8:30 am until 11:00 am. Please plan for pickup for your child at 11 am.
Meet Your Community Night
You are all invited to our MEET YOUR COMMUNITY night on Wednesday, September 18 at 5pm.
We appreciate your understanding that careful thought has been given to student class placements for this school year. We have placed students into their new classes and are confident that our classes are well balanced. Many variables are considered when placing students in classes including doing our best to honor parent requests. There still may be some student movement so please be patient as we find the best possible learning environment for each child in our school. If we make changes that will affect your child, you will be contacted.
Parent Input Goal Setting Conferences
Mark your calendars: EARLY DISMISSAL on September 26 and 27th at 12:30 pm for our Parent Input Goal Setting Conferences. More information to follow from your classroom teachers.

Please ensure that your child has supervision before 8:10 am and after 2:45 at the end of every day. If you will be late to pick up your child, please contact the office to let them know. The Springvalley Elementary Four Point Assessment Scale
Central Okanagan Public Schools Policy Guidelines
The Central Okanagan Public Schools’ Appeal Process
Policy 460 – Appeals states that “A student or a parent of a student who is entitled to an
educational program in the Central Okanagan Public Schools may appeal a decision of an
employee of the Board of Education which significantly affects the education, health, or
safety of the student”. For a complete description of the Appeals Policy along with the
recommended steps to follow in attempting to solve a problem, please refer to Policy 460 –
Appeals that can be accessed from the Policies link under the Board of Education heading
on the Central Okanagan Public Schools homepage at www.sd23.bc.ca.
The Central Okanagan Public Schools’ Financial Hardship Clause
Within Board Policy Regulation 425R – Student Fees (www.sd23.bc.ca), the Board of
Education has indicated “that a student will not be excluded from any educational program
due to financial hardship”. This clause in the Regulations provides for the private and
confidential consideration of financial circumstances of individual students and families,
while preserving the dignity of families which may be unable to pay. Please contact the
school Principal if you are facing a financial hardship that may restrict the ability of your
child to access a school program.
Accident Insurance
Central Okanagan Public Schools does not insure expenses for student injuries that occur on school grounds or during school activities. Parents and guardians can voluntarily purchase private accident insurance. The Kids Plus Accident Insurance Program that was previously offered to our students is now discontinued and the IA Financial Group will be offering the Family Accident Reimbursement Plan. This new product will be available to current insureds as well as new insureds and more information will be provided to the District for distribution to parents and guardians later in the year.

Students need a nutritious breakfast to be able to learn. We need volunteers to help this important service run effectively. If you are able to volunteer one morning/week between 8:00 am and 8:30 am please contact our Indigenous Advocate, Ms. Wynne, to sign up. Breakfast for students is served between 8:10 am and 8:25 am. Please note that the breakfast program will be in room 5 again this year. Students can access this room from the front of the school near the adventure playground beginning at 8:10 each school day. All students are welcome to join in the breakfast program!
Partial proceeds from the Gary and Maureen Bennett Family Fund are generously donated to Springvalley Elementary School each year for our morning
breakfast program. This donation helps provide a nutritious start for many of our students each day, giving them the best possible opportunity for
productive learning and healthy living. Springvalley Elementary School greatly appreciates the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Bennett for providing us with this yearly donation.
We are currently needing another $2000 to fund the program fully for 2019-2020. Please contact Sue Stevenson or Tim Van Brummelen if you are able to donate towards making this important morning breakfast program run this full year again. Thank you.

Safety Patrol
A reminder to all of our families that we have volunteer student crossing guards that are trained to assist students at the crosswalk directly in front of the school. If your child must cross Ziprick road, please encourage them to use the cross walk with the crossing guards. Together, we can continue to help students enjoy a safe arrival and departure from school. |
Volunteers
Many classrooms will request assistance for various field trips and in class support in the year ahead. The school board policy is that all volunteers must have a Criminal Record Check(CRC) completed before volunteering with students. If you are willing to help out, please come to the office to pick up the CRC form. The costs of the CRC will be paid for by the School Board. CRCs are valid for 4 years so you do not have to complete one each year. |
