Keeping it Safe at SVE
We are so proud of our students, families and staff who have continually managed to follow our district and Provincial health expectations to make sure our school remains clean, safe and and free of any Covid transmission. We all know how important it is for our students to be in school. The provincial restrictions do not change our effective school district safety plans; however, we strongly encourage families to wear masks when dropping off students on school grounds. City Hall sent a By-law officer to our school following a complaint made to City Hall. The by-law officer falsely suggested that all adults must wear masks on school grounds however our district supports this as a recommendation only. Thank you for doing your part to help stop the spread.
We understand how difficult it is to pick up your children when there is such limited space to park in our neighborhood. We do ask that you PLEASE respect our neighbors and do not park in their driveways or on their property at any time. Some of our neighbors on Cornwall Avenue have SVE parents parking in their driveway, and using their property and yards to turn their cars around. If you must park on Cornwall Avenue, please use the cul-de-sac at the end of the road to turn around legally and park your car on the road instead of the driveways or yards of our very patient neighbors. Thank you!

November Highlights
We held our Remembrance Day Assembly via zoom on November 10. Students learned why we wear poppies and how important it is to give a moment of silence to respect and remember those who have sacrificed and supported our country so we can live peacefully in Canada. Here are some bulletin boards teachers and students have worked on to share our learnings.

SVE Food Drive: Once again, our SVE Community will be feeding our own this holiday season. Many of our SVE families need a boost this Christmas so please consider donating to our Christmas Hamper Food Drive this year. We will be putting together over 30 Christmas Food Hampers and we need your support. Our food drive will run from Monday, December 7, until Monday, December 14. We are asking students to bring non-perishable donations from home and each day the items collected will be counted. We will have a friendly competition between the 2 classes in each cohort to see which class can bring the most non-perishable food donations by December 14. Many SVE community members have asked how else they can support our most needy SVE families this year. If you would like to donate to support our very own SVE families, please visit CASH ON LINE where you will see $5, $10, $20 or $50 Christmas Hamper Donation buttons. This money will be used to purchase fresh food and small gifts for our families in need. Alternatively you can contact the school to make a donation. Any amount will help! Hampers will be picked up or delivered to our families in need on Thursday and Friday, December 17 or 18th.
SD 23 District Strategic Plan Feedback Requested... As part of its commitment to community engagement, the District invites all parents, staff, and interested community members to participate in an interactive survey (https://my.thoughtexchange.com/#768215099) that will help shape the future direction of Central Okanagan Public Schools. The survey will allow you the opportunity to submit your ideas and review the ideas submitted by others. The survey is now open and will close on December 4, 2020.
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)- Our District SEL team has some great reminders about courage, grit and resilience this holiday season. You can read it below:

FreshGrade Portfolios - by now you should have received an invitation from your child's teacher to view your child's FreshGrade learning portfolio. This is our primary way of communicating your child's learning at Springvalley. Digital learning portfolios are where your child has the opportunity to share what they are learning and have CRITICALLY IMPORTANT LEARNING CONVERSATIONS with you. Please login today, and make a big difference in the learning your child is engaging with. You may want to set one night a week where you review your child's site and talk about:
1. What they are doing well. (more than just "good job." Boost their self esteem by proving to them that they are doing well with something specific: ex. "You have lots of interesting words like 'brilliant' and 'magical' in your writing example").
2. What they want to improve and next steps in their learning.
Click here to login to your parent account or sign up for an account or download the Freshgrade parent app. Learning Summaries will be sent home on Friday, December 11, 2020.

PAC Updates
A huge THANK YOU to our Springvalley Elementary community for helping us in our fundraising efforts this year! You have helped us raise over $2100 and brought us that much closer to purchasing new playground equipment. We still have the ongoing bottle drive through Columbia Bottle Depot on Kent Rd if you wish to help out over the holiday season by donating your empties. Please put in only 12 glass bottles per bag to prevent the bottles from breaking and cutting the bag or those sorting. Use our school phone number (250)870-5119 when printing stickers for your bags. Our next Springvalley Elementary PAC meeting will be on December 9th at 7pm through Zoom #84821301155 just use the password SVEPAC. We are also in need of someone who may be interested in helping take minutes during the PAC meetings. These meetings are about an hour and a half long and take place on the second Wednesday of the month. If you or another adult who is related to a child that attends Springvalley Elementary may be interested, please email us at [email protected]. I would also like to remind everyone that your Springvalley Elementary Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is here to help be a voice for you the parents. So if you have fundraising ideas, any ideas that could help enrich the school year for our children, or need support voicing your concerns, please feel free to email us at the above email address. Stay Safe, Stay Healthy and Stay Warm! Your SVE PAC Co-Chairpersons Dorey Gardiner & Kim Graumann |
