From the SVE Admin Team
Welcome, welcome, welcome! We want to welcome our returning families back to Springvalley Elementary, and welcome all the new families to this wonderful school. Our community has been through some very difficult times, but we are hopeful for a better year. Your children come to us to learn and play, and perhaps more importantly, learn to manage themselves and their emotions. We work very closely as a team to support each child, and to do our best to meet all of their learning and social-emotional needs. Please join your PAC meeting on the 21st to learn first-hand about many of the upcoming events and programs at Springvalley Elementary.
Photo Day is tomorrow, September 14th - Individual student photos will be taken tomorrow at school by Lifetouch. When they are ready, you will receive information on how to order them.
School Schedule - Our first bell goes at 8:25am, and then the day begins at 8:30am. We know that children learn best when they are rested and ready to go. Coming to school late frequently means that a child may miss key instruction and social gathering time. Please do your best to have your children here on time. When we dismiss at 2:30pm there is supervision outside until 2:45pm.
Attendance - School Messenger is the app we use to connect with you regarding attendance. Please follow this link if you have not already done so.
School Cash Online - Click on this link to register for School Cash Online. You will only need to sign up once for this app for as long as your children attend SD23 schools. Use the link to pay your school fees, field trip fees, and any other additional costs that may arise. If you have any questions, please call Ms. Angus in our office.
Hope - The theme for this year is Hope. We will be examining ways at school to be hopeful, and look optimistically toward the future. As a staff we began with this video about what some students and teachers may be hoping for in the coming year.
Closed Campus - We continue to be a closed campus, meaning that all guests or visitors need to arrange a meeting ahead of time as our doors are locked during the day. Please call us at 250-870-5119, or email us at [email protected]. Mr. Coats can be reached by email at [email protected], and Ms. Everett can be reached at [email protected].
Please leave Fido at home - As dogs are not allowed on the school property, please arrange to meet you child somewhere by the fence if you have a dog with you.
Parent Teacher Conferences - We will be setting up virtual conferences again this year, and will send you a link to the sign-up system in a couple of weeks. Our fall parent/teacher conferences will take place on the afternoons of Wednesday, October 6th and Thurs. October 7th. Classes will be dismissed 2 hours early at 12:30pm on both days.

PAC Update
A very big welcome and welcome back to all our beloved Springvalley Elementary School community from your Parent Advisory Council (PAC). We hope to continue to bring exciting events to help enrich the students of Springvalley Elementary. Your PAC would like to formally like to invite you to our annual AGM meeting. We are urgently calling on all parents, grandparents, and caregivers of Springvalley Elementary students for your help this September 21st. We have a need for parents (grandparents and caregivers count too!) to be there to vote. If we do not have enough people to vote, then we may lose our PAC and all the funding that goes with it. If you are interested in helping further, we have several roles that range in commitment levels starting by volunteering a couple hours a year, a monthly commitment like being a Council Member (Member at Large or Vice President), perhaps as a part of a hot lunch committee, or a simple as just being there to vote! These last couple of years have been challenging and the school PACs have become a very important voice among the discussion of the needs of our children so please help us not to lose the voice of the Springvalley Parents. Join us September 21st at 6:30 pm (Meeting info to follow later) to help your community out. If you have any questions about volunteer opportunities or need assistance answering any questions, please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected]. Your Springvalley PAC is here to help! FreshGrade Portfolios - This is our primary way of communicating your child's learning at Springvalley. Digital learning portfolios are where your child has the opportunity to share what they are learning and have CRITICALLY IMPORTANT LEARNING CONVERSATIONS with you. Please login and make a difference in the learning your child is engaging with. You may want to set one night a week where you review your child's site and talk about:
1. What they are doing well. (more than just "good job." Boost their self esteem by proving to them that they are doing well with something specific: ex. "You have lots of interesting words like 'brilliant' and 'magical' in your writing example"). 2. What they want to improve and next steps in their learning. Click here to login to your parent account or sign up for an account or download the Freshgrade parent app. Parent / Teacher conferences will be on February 3rd and 4th. A sign up will be sent to you soon. |

Financial Hardship The Central Okanagan School District's Financial Hardship Clause Within School District Regulations 425R – Student Fees (see www.sd23.bc.ca), the Board of Education has indicated "that a student will not be excluded from any educational program due to financial hardship". Clause 8.5 in the Regulations provides "Principals are directed to establish a procedure in each school which will allow for the private and confidential consideration of financial circumstances of individual students and families. Such procedures will preserve the dignity of families who may be unable to pay". Please contact the school Principal if you are facing a financial hardship that may restrict the ability of your child to access a school program.

Accident Insurance
Central Okanagan Public Schools does not insure expenses for student injuries that occur on school grounds or during school activities. Parents and guardians can voluntarily purchase private accident insurance. The Kids Plus Accident Insurance Program that was previously offered to our students was discontinued in 2019. The IA Financial Group now offers the Family Accident Reimbursement Plan (FARP) which is a voluntary plan that provides coverage for students and their families against accidental injury, unexpected medical expenses and critical illness.
