From the SVE Admin Team
What a smooth and wonderful start up it has been at Springvalley Elementary! We are excited as we see our children settled in their classrooms and putting in the effort and engagement needed to learn and grow!
Parental involvement is as important for your child's learning journey as what we do here at school. It can be as simple as SHOWING interest in what your child is doing in school to have an impact on learning. Ask them lots of questions and your children will be inspired to grow! The work that your child brings home or is posted on their FreshGrade portfolio can help start conversations about their learning.
The most powerful conversation to inspire your child to WANT to learn is having them show you HOW they have grown in the learning. Have them compare their work from earlier in the year or last year with their current work. Have them explain the difference to you. This proves to them that they are learning and growing and will inspire them to put in the effort to continue to learn.
“At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child's success is the positive involvement of parents.” Jane D. Hull
FreshGrade
This year most teachers and students at Springvalley will be posting evidence of student learning on electronic portfolios with pictures, videos and writing about their work. Parents have been sent an email on how to sign up on Freshgrade so that you can login securely, see your child's work online and have conversations with your child throughout the term.
ARE YOU MISSING IMPORTANT NOTICES FROM THE SCHOOL?
We often sent reminders of school events and important updates through our TEXT message system so you receive information on your phone. If you do not receive TEXT reminders, all you need to do is type the letter “Y” to the number 978-338 and you will be signed up to receive text reminders/updates etc.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR OUR BREAKFAST PROGRAM
Our Indigenous Advocate Ms. Wynne makes breakfast for 50 - 80 students each morning. She needs volunteers to help her each morning for 30 minutes. If you can volunteer even one morning a week, please contact the school to speak with Ms. Wynne.
UNPLUGGING: One day a week!
We recently heard about a brilliant idea: a Tech Break: every week, from Friday night to Saturday night, many families are turning off all screens—cellphones, TVs, computers. Push back those anxious thoughts, and think about the possibilities: you could take a walk. You could cook lunch with your kids. You could talk. You could play board games. You could build a fort outside with them.
Try planning ahead for a Tech Break this coming weekend!
Fall 2019 Family Active Nights
Want to get out of the house and have some physical fun with your family? The City of Kelowna arranges for 2 Family Active Nights at SVE each year. The first will be held on Friday, November 15 beginning at 6:30 pm in the school gymnasium. A sign up notice will be sent home with students prior to the night. We hope to see you here!
From the School Office
From time to time we all forget things. Should you find the need to drop off forgotten items for your child such as lunches, books, etc., please drop them off at the office rather than going to your child's classroom. Fewer interruptions mean maximum learning time for all learners, and we will be happy to deliver items during the next non-instructional break.
As well, we receive phone calls throughout the day to pass on messages to students. Please understand that we do not interrupt classes to deliver messages except on an emergency basis. By keeping non-emergency messages to a minimum, we will incur fewer classroom disruptions and more time will be spent on the important work of educating our students. Thank you for your understanding.

Children need lots of SLEEP to LEARN One of the greatest academic gifts you can give your child is a GOOD NIGHT's SLEEP. The research is clear - your brain does NOT function close to its potential without proper sleep. School-aged children need 9 to 11 hours of sleep daily according to doctors. A good bedtime then is between 7 and 8 pm. It is important to have NO screens in the bedroom. Also, sleep is not of good quality if they use a screen within an hour or two of going to bed as the healing, renewing REM sleep is interrupted. The bottom line is that an early bedtime is CRUCIAL for your child to be able to learn the next day. And it will also give parents some downtime after the kids are in bed - another great way to support family health! |

PAC NEWS
RECYCLING NEEDED!
Your bottles will help us buy playground equipment, stock our Imagination Lab and purchase a school barbecue!
Springvalley PAC now has a Return It-Express account! Walk in to Columbia Bottle Depot on Kent Road, print a sticker with our school phone number (250) 870-5119, and stick the stickers to your bags of bottle returns in transparent bags. You are done in 2 minutes and our school PAC will receive the money from your bottles! As an ongoing way to fund raise money for the school PAC we have setup up an account with the bottle depot at 1936 Kent Rd.
With the PAC setting a large goal of purchasing more playground equipment for the school, bottle returns are an easy way to help contribute!
When you arrive at the bottle depot, just inside the doors to the left is a kiosk for express returns; all you have to do is enter the school’s phone number (250)870-5119, how many bags your dropping off, place the printed label(s) on your bag(s) of recyclables, place your recyclables in the return bin and you are done! The PAC’s account will then be credited within 5 business days!
No more bottle drives, having to count and sort, or get sticky! An easy way to contribute to support Springvalley Elementary... Tell your friends and family!
Please remember that all empties MUST be in transparent plastic bags when dropped off and tied off so that bottle/cans do not become loose.

Volunteers
Many classrooms will request assistance for various field trips and in class support in the year ahead. The school board policy is that all volunteers must have a Criminal Record Check(CRC) completed before volunteering with students. If you are willing to help out, please come to the office to pick up the CRC form. The costs of the CRC will be paid for by the School Board. CRCs are valid for 4 years so you do not have to complete one each year. |
