From the SVE Admin Team
ir It's hard to believe we are into our third month of this school year! October was an action packed month of learning! Many special events happened. Twin Kennedy, an identical twin country music duo, entertained us with world class fiddling, guitar playing and singing! Thanks to all the students, parents, and staff who came together to celebrate Halloween during our Annual Monster Bash. Thank you to the PAC for their work at putting this fantastic event together. The PAC reported raising much money at this event to support learning at SVE! A big thank you to everyone who helped make the Monster Bash a huge success! We practiced as a school for our earthquake drill - drop, take cover and hold on. You may want to practice with your children at home as well.
Volleyball season is almost upon us, and 13 excited children will be playing with other Rutland area schools. A huge thank you to Ms. Grewal and Ms. Hamilton for volunteering their time to make this opportunity available to our students!
Pumpkin Inquiry - I Wonder ....
Ms. Kohar, Ms. Hamilton, Ms. Vecchio and Ms. Grewal's classes have been asking "I Wonder...?" questions and discovering answers together. Here is a summary of their pumpkin inquiry process: "We started the inquiry by encouraging students to share words related to pumpkins. Then we made pumpkin observations and asked "I wonder" questions. During the investigation phase, we had four stations; a sink or float station, a measuring station, a parts of a pumpkin station, and a weighing station. We observed the texture and colors of the various pumpkins and then we dissected pumpkins to take a closer look on the insides. We answered many of our "wonders" through this process. The next steps will be to incorporate technology and engineering into the inquiry by researching the remaining questions; visiting webpages or reading a book! We may incorporate engineering to make predictions about which pumpkin we think is going to roll fastest or furthest by making ramps. We will use math to estimate the number of seeds in a pumpkin or count the lines on the outside of a pumpkin. The important thing about inquiry is that student’s wonders guide the inquiry and direction of the study. Now that students have been taught the process a scientist would use to observe and wonder, who knows where our inquiries will take our learning!"

It's COLD Out There!
Winter is most definitely on its way with temperatures now dipping below zero on some nights. Students need fresh air and so will spend time outside at breaks and lunches daily. We ask that you ensure children dress appropriately for the weather conditions. Coats, toques, proper foot wear, umbrellas and gloves are recommended. After school supervision ends at 2:45 pm. In an effort to ensure our children’s safety, we ask that students, who are not under the supervision of a parent or guardian, make their way home to continue playing with friends. |
