Almost there...
In two weeks we will sending students home for the two week spring vacation period. It is an unusual year in that none of us are planning any trips to visit family, but let's all hope that with the vaccines coming around, it won't be long before we can gather again. We are still following all mandated health guidelines, and encourage you to reach out if you have any questions about how we implement them. Our number in the office is 250-870-5119, and my email is [email protected]
Our New School Song Have a look at this video featuring our brand new school song! Thanks to our visiting artist, Andrew Allen and our music teacher Mrs. Schjodt for all their work.
Foundation Skills Assessment Our grade fours will be finishing up the FSA this week. The data from this assessment helps the province monitor the progress of over 44 000 grade four students in BC, and to determine where we as educators need to focus to help them succeed. Thank you for your support in this.
Our Staff Parking Lot
We are having to take time away from greeting and supervising our students in the morning and after school so that we can monitor the staff parking lot. If you want to walk your child to their classroom, or meet them at the door after school please park on the neighboring streets. We may have to make the difficult decision to close our parking lot to all parents, except for those families with special circumstances.
Helping other families
There are times when some families need extra help either with pick up after school, or drop off in the morning. Currently, there is one family seeking some assistance from 6:30am until school starts. Please let the office know if this parent could drop her child off with you.

Student Learning Survey 2020/2021
The Provincial Student Learning Survey is unique in its scope, size and usefulness to schools. It gathers information from parents/guardians/caregivers, teachers and students on topics related to school environment, safety, and achievement. The information is used for planning in individual schools and provides a district and provincial perspective.
This Spring the Student Learning Survey will be administered to students in grade four, their parents/guardians/caregivers, and all school staff. We encourage parents/guardians/caregivers to participate in this survey, as the results are important in identifying and celebrating current strengths, as well as determining where the school needs to focus improvement. The surveys contain standard questions for the Province – in addition, questions from the school and/or district that focus on local conditions or issues may be included.
The survey can be completed electronically and can be accessed on the Internet at http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/sat_survey. Any computer with an Internet connection can be used, and access to the e-survey is simple and secure. The survey can be accessed through the link with or without an anonymous logon code by selecting the school district and school name where your child attends school. Provincial, District and School Reports for previous years can be viewed at the same site under the Results section.
The e-survey site will be open until April 30th. If you have any questions, please contact the school.
In the Know
The next 'In the Know' (ItK) parent evening for families will be held on Monday, March 8th, 2021 at 4:30pm. This month the topic we will be discussing is Substance Use: Relationship Over Responsibility. If you know of any families who may find this of benefit please feel free to share the attached poster. Families can also register at this link: FamilySmart Events.
Talk With Our Kids About Money - Virtual 2021A Virtual Money Fair involves students, either learning at home or in the classroom, selecting a money topic that is of interest to them, undertaking research to explore and learn about that topic, and then preparing a creative and engaging video presentation that showcases the outcome of their research and what they learned. We will be getting submissions from across the entire country, posting them on the secure CFEE website and then highlighting the winner announced at the National Money Fair.
We will have a team of judges review all the submissions to identify the best. The top presentations will win $2000 for first prize, $1000 for second prize and $500 for third prize. Winners will be announced at our Annual National Money Fair (virtual this year) on April 14, 2021. This contest is limited to students age 9 –14 or grades 4 – 8. A participant can only enter into one CFEE contest within a given year. A Money Fair should be a fun, interesting, and engaging activity for students at home or at school– at the same time as they learn about money and improve their financial literacy and capability.
For more information on how to get started, contact Jessi Zielke at [email protected].

Social-Emotional Learning Scoop
We know that the changes during the pandemic are stressful for everyone, including our students. Our District SEL team has some great reminders about strengthening relationships. The latest SEL Scoop is out, and you can read it here.

FreshGrade Portfolios - This is our primary way of communicating your child's learning at Springvalley. Digital learning portfolios are where your child has the opportunity to share what they are learning and have CRITICALLY IMPORTANT LEARNING CONVERSATIONS with you. Please login and make a difference in the learning your child is engaging with. You may want to set one night a week where you review your child's site and talk about:
1. What they are doing well. (more than just "good job." Boost their self esteem by proving to them that they are doing well with something specific: ex. "You have lots of interesting words like 'brilliant' and 'magical' in your writing example").
2. What they want to improve and next steps in their learning.
Click here to login to your parent account or sign up for an account or download the Freshgrade parent app. Parent / Teacher conferences will be on February 3rd and 4th. A sign up will be sent to you soon.

PAC Updates
Happy February Springvalley Elementary community! Your PAC has been working hard to find different ways to help fundraise for our school community. Watch for information next week for another opportunity to purchase Purdy’s just in time for an Easter delivery. Also keep an eye out for the new cookie dough fundraiser that is being planned for in the coming months, it’s a easy way to get home baked cookies without all the mess! We still have the ongoing bottle drive through Columbia Bottle Depot on Kent Rd if you wish to help out over the holiday season by donating your empties. Please put in only 12 glass bottles per bag to prevent the bottles from breaking and cutting the bag or those sorting. Our next Springvalley Elementary PAC meeting will be on March 10th at 7pm through Zoom # 848 2130 1155 just use the password SVEPAC. It is an easy way to be informed about what is going on in our school community.
