From the office
The time is certainly zipping along as we get into the last two months of this most unusual school year. Normally we are planning track and field events, field trips, and year end celebrations. We are working on plans for the grade fives to have some way to mark the end of their elementary careers, and hope to have more information on that for you very soon. This weekend most of the staff were able to get vaccinated, but we are still following all mandated health guidelines, and encourage you to reach out if you have any questions about how we implement them. Our number in the office is 250-870-5119, and my email is [email protected].
Parent Input for Class Placement Consideration: Our staff invests a great amount of time in placing each student into a classroom based on the educational needs, learning style, strengths and challenges of the child. We also work hard to make sure we balance all of the learning needs and strengths in each class as well. We appreciate your parent input if there are certain learning conditions, social emotional considerations or social groupings that you would like us to consider. We will consider your requests, but please keep in mind it is not always possible to meet specific request, and we do not accept requests for specific teachers. You can find the Parent Input Form here, which you can print and send in with your child, or simply email Mr. Coats with your input.
Canadian Mental Health Week
This week we will focus on Mental health at school, including a Green Shirt Day on Tuesday, May 4th. There are a number of resources for you at home as well at this site by Canadian Mental Health and the tagline this year is Name it, Don't Numb it. Being able to talk about staying healthy in our bodies and minds is something we always do at school, but this week will allow us to do a little more, like admitting that we don't have to be happy all the time to be in good mental health.
As we come into the final push of the academic year, we would like to remind everyone how important sleep hygiene and school attendance are. These are the two best ways to help your children succeed at school. Have a look at this link for tips on helping your child have a good night's sleep.

Social-Emotional Learning
The Social and Emotional Learning Team's Tip of the Week Moving our bodies has many benefits for our physical, mental, and emotional health. Build in big or small movement breaks throughout the day to decrease stress and increase fun! Jump rope, kick a ball, toss a Frisbee, play hopscotch, tag, or Red-Light-Green-Light or check out some classic outdoor games.
Eating meals together as a family has many positive effects, such as higher nutrient intake and improved mental health. Have your child choose a recipe that you can make together. Let your child help prepare the recipe as much as they are comfortable. Share the dish as a family and celebrate!

PAC Updates
Happy May Springvalley Elementary community! A BIG thank you to those who ordered cookie dough during our fundraiser. We are expecting delivery of your orders On May 11th and will be having a drive-thru pickup that evening between 4:30pm and 6pm that same day. Please plan to have your orders picked up during that time as we will not be sending the dough home with the children. Any questions or concerns regarding the cookie dough fundraiser can be emailed to [email protected] . On May 5th we have teamed up with Dominos in Rutland for a fundraiser where they will donate $5 for every coupon used in the flyer that will be sent home with your child. So why not take a night off from cooking and order in. We still have the ongoing bottle drive through Columbia Bottle Depot on Kent Rd if you wish to donate your empties while doing your spring cleaning. Please put in only 12 glass bottles per bag to prevent the bottles from breaking and cutting the bag or those sorting. Keep your eyes open for a special fundraiser that is perfect for BBQ season! I would also like to remind everyone that your Springvalley Elementary Parent Advisory Council is here to help be a voice for you the parents so if you have great fundraising ideas, any ideas that could help enrich the school year for our children, or need support voicing your concerns please feel free to email us at [email protected] to share your thoughts with us. I hope to see you at the next PAC meeting on May 12th at 7pm Zoom 848 2130 1155 pswd SVEPAC. Your SVE PAC Co-Chairpersons, Dorey Gardiner & Kim Graumann |
FreshGrade Portfolios - This is our primary way of communicating your child's learning at Springvalley. Digital learning portfolios are where your child has the opportunity to share what they are learning and have CRITICALLY IMPORTANT LEARNING CONVERSATIONS with you. Please login and make a difference in the learning your child is engaging with. You may want to set one night a week where you review your child's site and talk about:
1. What they are doing well. (more than just "good job." Boost their self esteem by proving to them that they are doing well with something specific: ex. "You have lots of interesting words like 'brilliant' and 'magical' in your writing example").
2. What they want to improve and next steps in their learning.
